  1.CNN Student News

CNN Student News is a ten-minute, commercial-free, daily news program designed for middle and high school classes. It is produced by the journalists at CNN. This award-winning show and its companion website are available free of charge throughout the school year.

  2.60-Second Science

  3.NPR News

  4.AP News Minute

  5.BBC World Service

An airplane powered totally by the sun landed in Seville, Spain early Thursday after completing a 71-hour flight across the Atlantic Ocean.

The plane, a Solar Impulse 2 model, has just one seat. It left from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York Monday morning.

This was the plane’s 15th stop in its planned around-the-world trip. The trip began in Abu Dhabi in March of 2015.

Swiss aviator Bertrand Piccard operated the solar-powered plane on this leg of the tour. The Solar Pulse 2 had an average speed of 70 kilometers an hour during his flight.

The plane’s power comes from 17,000 solar cells built into the wings. The cells capture the sun’s energy, which is stored in batteries on the plane.

The Solar Pulse 2 has a 72-meter wingspan. That is longer than the wingspan of a Boeing 747 passenger plane. The solar-powered plane weighs about as much as an automobile.

Piccard’s friend and business partner Andre Borschberg will operate the plane on the final part of the trip. He plans to fly from Seville to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Rice farmers in Thailand are facing a large drop in income because of the drop in the price of rice throughout Asia.

At the same time, costs to grow the crop are increasing. Farmers are not sure who to ask for help. Many of them are struggling this year. Some of them may not even make enough money to pay their production costs.

Experts say the governments rice storage plan is a short-term answer. It is similar to a plan put in place by then-Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. Because of the failure of that plan, the military ousted the prime minister and fined her over $1 billion.

Many Thai workers believe the government does not know how to manage the economy. They believe the government is more interested in controlling the country than in helping farmers.

About 40 percent of the Thai workforce has agricultural jobs.

Thailand faces strong competition for rice exports from India and Vietnam. This is partly because of lower pay in neighboring countries and large expected harvests this year.

A recent study paid for by the Bank of Thailand said Thai farmers should grow crops in addition to rice. It also said farmers should be trained to help predict market changes.

Singhachai Boonyayotin is a senior director of the Bank of Thailand.

  Wachirajak Nin-khuntod

He said, "My parents didnt believe at first that I would be able to sell rice on social media, because most farmers believe we can sell rice to the middleman or rice mill company only."

Now, he says, his parents know that they can sell their own rice without a middleman.

Hannah Godefa is just 16 years old, but she is busy defending the right of all girls and women to be educated. The young woman serves as a national goodwill ambassador to Ethiopia for UNICEF -- the United Nations Childrens Fund. And she is urging the UN to make a workable plan to end the discrimination that keeps girls out of classrooms.

Last week, for example, she spoke in Geneva to the committee on elimination of discrimination against women. She talked about increasing girls chances for education and protecting them within education from sexual and other abuses.

UNICEF national ambassador to Ethiopia Hannah Godefa

Hannah Godefa was born in Canada to Ethiopian parents. She was appointed to her UNICEF job in January of 2013. Since then, she has visited Ethiopia and other countries in Africa.

She describes the purpose of her work as speaking out for the millions of girls who are not attending school. Hannah notes that some girls do not have a school available to attend. And there are other reasons they can not get an education.

"Girls also face a lot of responsibilities that, I say, discourage them from attending school - lots of family responsibilities," Godefa said.

The young UNICEF ambassador believes cultural barriers and economic considerations also limit girls chances. Sometimes, parents must choose whether to send their boys or girls to school. Hannah Godefa says many families value girls as workers.

"So, all the odds are stacked against them. That is why we have to target them and support them and protect them," Godefa said.

Hannah became interested in childrens education when she was only 7 years old. She was visiting her grandmother in rural Ethiopia at the time. Hannah became friends with a local girl and wanted to keep communicating with her when she returned home.

But Hannahs parents told her that the other girls do not have pencils or paper to write letters. Their daughter reacted by establishing the Pencil Mountain project. She says the project has provided more than 500,000 objects including writing instruments for use in schools.

"So, things beyond pencils, like other basic school supplies as well as text books for second-generation universities, some of the newer universities that have been constructed in Ethiopia, " Godefa said.

The project has also provided wheelchairs for disable students. Nowadays, as a teenager, Hannah does a lot of public speaking. She spoke at the International Day of the Girl Child at UNICEF New York Headquarters in October 2013. She made the presentation a month before her sixteenth birthday.

She also acted as moderator or leader at a UNICEF event last December. American singer Katy Perry accepted responsibilities as UNICEFs latest goodwill ambassador at that event. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was among world leaders attending the discussion.

If threes a crowd, a new planet recently discovered orbiting a sunlike star is really cluttering up its neighborhood.

The new planet is the fourth Jupiter-like world to be found around the young star HR 8799, astronomers announced today. The same team had previously found the other three planets in 2008, when they took a direct picture of the star system.

Of the more than 500 planets discovered to date outside our solar system, most have been found via indirect methods, such as looking for planets gravitational tugs on their host stars or for dips in starlight when planets pass in front of their hosts.

The new planet was also found in a direct image of the HR 8799 system. But based on the masses of the planets and their distances from the star, the fourth world challenges current theories of planet formation, according to the study authors.

"This is the first multiplanet system directly imaged so far, so its quite a feat," said lead study author Christian Marois, an astronomer at the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics in Canada.

"But we are now stuck with four planets [and] we cannot explain their formation and their current locations by any of our models."

Fourth Planet Too Close to Its Parent?

The previously known planets around HR 8799 are about five, seven, and ten times Jupiters mass. They orbit between 2.2 billion miles (3.5 billion kilometers) from the star—roughly the same as Neptunes distance from the sun—and 6.3 billion miles (10.1 billion kilometers), or almost twice Plutos distance.

The most distant planet circles just inside a dusty disk similar to that produced by the solar systems Kuiper belt, a region of small, icy bodies that includes Pluto.

The whole HR 8799 system is estimated to be no more than 60 million years old, so the planets are still glowing with heat from their formation. This heat signature is what betrayed the planets positions in the previous infrared images of the star.

Astronomers found the fourth planet using the Keck II telescope on the peak of Mauna Kea in Hawaii. The instrument is equipped with a special near-infrared imager and adaptive optics to eliminate the blurring effect of Earths atmosphere.

Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It might be walking, cycling, or swimming , or in winter , skating or skiing . It might be a game of some kind —football, hockey, golf or tennis., or it might be mountaineering . Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship , and to take risks on high mountains ? This astonishment it probably caused by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure. If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team sport”. We should be mistaken in this . There are , it is true , no “matcher” between “ teams” of climbers , however, when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend , there is obviously teamwork .

  Hints:EuropeBritainFranceGermanyPoland UkraineCarboniferousfuelthe Industrial Revolutionpowerhouse.

It took a ten-meter layer of fallen rain forest to make just a one-meter seam of coal. When you consider the depth of all the seams in all the coalfields worked in Europe, from Britain through to northern France and Germany, Poland and Ukraine, the immense scale of Carboniferous forests becomes clear.

Coal fuelled one of the greatest transformations that Europe has ever seen. Its presence all across the continent was a vital component in making Europe the cradle of the Industrial Revolution and ultimately turned it into the economic powerhouse it is today. The ancient past can directly shape the present. Europe is now the most urbanized and industrialized continent on the globe, largely thanks to its position on the equator 300 million years ago.

I hope your Thursday is going well so far. I`m Carl Azuz. And we are glad to have you watching CNN STUDENT NEWS. Recent swings in the U.S. stock market are violent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, one indicator of how the whole market is doing, closed down 173 points yesterday. At one point, it had dropped 460 points. We`ve told you how when investors are afraid, they tend to sell, dropping the value of stocks in the market. What are they afraid of?For one thing, Germany. Europe`s largest economy isn`t doing well. For another American retail sales decreases, and so did prices. Those are bad signs for the economy`s health.

Another reason investors are fearful, the possible spread of the deadly Ebola virus in the U.S. A second nurse at a Dallas Texas Hospital has contracted the disease. Like Nina Pham, whom we told you about earlier, 29-year old Amber Vincent helped treat a Liberian man who died last week from Ebola. Vincent had traveled to Ohio recently. The CDC says, she wasn`t officially allowed to travel on a commercial plane, but it says the risk to others is low since Vincent didn`t have symptoms when she went.

Meanwhile, America`s largest nurses` union is strongly criticizing health officials, including the CDC over how they`ve handled Ebola. It says the Dallas nurses didn`t have the supplies or the training they needed and that they feel lied to and deserted to handle their own situation.

The CDC says it`s committed to the nurses` safety and giving them what they need to safely manage Ebola patients.

Also, President Obama postponed a Democratic campaign trip yesterday. Instead, he met with cabinet agencies to discuss the government`s response to Ebola.

One thing that`s spreading faster than the disease is the fear of it.

A scene out of a disaster movie. First responders in hazmat gear board an Emirates` flight from Dubai and check five passengers with flu-like symptoms. None met the criteria for Ebola or had visited Africa.

At LAX, 40 firefighters respond to a passenger with flu-like symptoms. But that`s where the scare ends.

It has turned out that there was some miscommunication that this patient had been to the continent of Africa, but not near West Africa.

Ebola has not, repeat, not, spread through the U.S., but fear certainly has. In Nashville, Tennessee, a sick passenger was taken of the plane that originated in Dallas. The patient has no contact with anyone with Ebola or traveled to Africa.

In Richmond, Virginia, a patient with a low-grade fever who had traveled to Africa is isolated. Even though the clinic says they don`t believe it`s Ebola.

Each scare stretches first responders and can cost taxpayers thousands of dollars and flu season has barely begun.

People will take this one in stride, but it takes a while. It takes longer if you tell them they are panicking.

What makes this societal learning curve war, says Sandman, is early on the CDC chief insisted everything was under control, then the nurse in Dallas contracted the disease.

What he didn`t say is it`s going to be harder than people imagine. It`s going to be harder than we imagine. So, now, yeah, now people are angry at the CDC and that anger is sort of morphing into fear.

Ladies and gentlemen, your attention, please! Our bus will arrive at Lake Park in a few minutes. You can feel the comfortable cool air coming from the lake. This is the favourite place for tourists in the summer afternoon like today. This lake is one of the great wonders of nature. No one knows when or how it was formed. But people began to build houses around the lake a hundred years ago, so in this park you can have a special view of houses of all shapes and styles and colors. It is like an architecture show. In late autumn and winter, this park is the best place for bird watching. School teachers like to bring children here and they just love it.

Now our bus is driving around the lake. You can sit back and enjoy the beauty of everything here. The bus will take us to a good spot, where you can take the most wonderful photos you have ever taken.

Here we are. Please get off and watch your step. Return to the bus in twenty minutes. Thank you!
