A Multi-faceted Analysis of Robert Jordan in For Whom the Bell Tolls
Abstract
For Whom the Bell Tolls is one representative of Hemingway’s works. Robert Jordan, the protagonist of this novel, is one typical image of Hemingway’s code man. This thesis is a multi-faceted analysis of Robert Jordan from three points: heroism, negative and tragedy in order to research the complexity of personality. Firstly, it can get a explaination that he is a heroic character from his tenacious will, extraordinary audacity, excellent ability and his purpose of participation in the war. Secondly, it displays the side of negative on him from his negative attitude toward love and mission. And last it is to analyze his tragic love and tragic death in order to reveal his tragedy. The complex characteristic of Robert Jordan reflects the value of life and the sense of reality in Hemingway’s literature works.

摘 要
《战地钟声》是海明威的代表作之1，其中主人公罗伯特•乔丹是典型的海明威式硬汉形象。本文从人物的英雄性，消极性和悲剧性3个方面对罗伯特•乔丹进行多维审视，研究其人物性格的复杂性。首先，通过对他坚韧的意志力，非凡的胆识和卓越的才能及他参战目的的重新阅读，阐释其英雄气概。然后，透过他对爱情和此次任务的消极态度，表现其身上消极的1面。最后，通过分析他的悲剧爱情和悲剧死亡，从而揭示人物的悲剧性。罗伯特•乔丹复杂的人性特征体现出了海明威文学作品的生命价值和真实意义。
