Love is like the wild rose-briar;
Friendship like the holly-tree*.
The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms*,
But which will bloom most constantly?
*The wild rose-briar is sweet in spring,
Its summer blossoms scent the air;
Yet wait till winter comes again,
And who will call the wild-briar fair? *
Then, scorn the silly rose-wreath now,
And deck thee with hollys sheen,
That, when December blights thy brow,
He still may leave thy garland en.*
*爱情像野玫瑰，友情像冬青。
当玫瑰开花的时候，冬青却墨绿着，表示爱情激烈而友情则平淡。
哪种能保持盛开的状态，答案当然是后者。
*野玫瑰在春天和夏天开花，花香四溢。
但是到了冬天，谁会说它漂亮呢？
表示爱情之花盛开的时候十分甜蜜，但过了高潮，就不再值得称道了。
*冬青在平时不很惹眼，甚至遭人唾弃，但当冬天来临，万物皆枯萎的时候，
花园里的它还充满生机和活力。
表示友情平时可能不为人所重视或注意，但在人们遇到困难，没有其他出路
的时候，它可能成为你的希望所在。
