Should the Four Books Be Set in the UniversityCurricula?

Under the influence of Western cultures, traditionalclassic books were expelled from school curricula inthe New Culture Movement in the early 20th century.Since then, students in primary schools and highschools have been liberated from the claimed trash offeudalism. During the Cultural Revolution, traditional classic books were everely renounced again. As a result, students are taught toassociate traditional classic books with backwardness of feudalism.

With this background knowledge, we can easily understand why the adoption of the FourBooks in some universities results in ongoing public controversy in an opener society incomparison with the past. Ironically, advocating the Four Books being taught in college or not, almost everyone is familiar with certain frequently cited sentences from traditional classicbooks. As for me, Adopting the Four Books in university curricula is feasible.

Firstly, it is unfair to associate the Four Books with the backwardness of feudal society andhence refuseto read them. Admittedly, those classic books were written in ancient times andinevitably could not transcend over temporal limitations. Some ideas conveyed in the FourBooks even contradict contemporary thoughts. However, those classic books are records ofancient minds, without which we can not achieve today’s civilization. Some may argue that asancient minds are outdated, it is useless to know that again. The truthis that ancient minds arealso part of the ongoing process of our cultural development. If we are able to acquire a basicknowledge of traditional culture, we are likely to have a better chance to understandcontemporary culture.

Secondly, as college students should have the ability of critical thinking, they can figure outwhat is applicable and what is trash from the Four Books. Generally speaking, someeducationalists worry college students will absorb outdated values and thoughts from thosetraditional classic books so they deny setting the Four Books in college curricula. While weadmit that those books were written in ancient times and hence they are representative ideasof the ruling class (for ordinary people were denied opportunities to learn reading and writing),it is impossible to apply those ideas in our current society.

More important, college students are supposed to have the critical thinking ability and can tellthe rightfrom the wrong. Once they realize why some ideas are feudalist trash by reading andcritical thinking, it is more likely to eliminate the remaining feudalist trash in the mind than byteachers’ exhortations.

In sum, as college students, they are able to think critically so that they can tell the essence oftraditional Chinese culture from the feudalist trashes. Besides, adopting the Four Bookscourse helps preserve traditional culture. Therefore, adopting the Four Books in collegecurricula is both practical and beneficial.

It is generally agreed that society benefits from the work of its members. Compare the contributions of artists to society with the contributions of scientists to society. Which type of contribution do you think is valued more by your society? Give specific reasons to support your answer.

Art and science are essentially a strange coupling. More often than not, they are considered as divergent rather than consistent with each other. The Artist employs image and metaphor; the scientist uses number and equation. By casual juxtaposition, these two fields seem to have little in common: There are few if any references to art in any standard textbook of science; art historians rarely interpret an artist's work in light of the conceptual framework of science. Despite what appear to be irreconcilable differences, however, they do have at least one thing in common --- both of them have significant contribution to the society, either through probably distinctive way.

The development of science and technology has always accompanied the progress of the society. The invention of the steam engine brought a new era of thrift of world economy; the employment electricity has multiplied the productivity and virtually reproduced limited resources on the Earth; the innovation of computer technologies has made the Earth a little village and connected distant countries as a single market. While sometimes the progress of science and technology, for example, technology of human cloning, cause troubles or originate dilemmas, it seems always undeniable that in a broad sense, the development of science has provided people a much higher standard of living than that of their counterparts in any phrase of the history.

Science has been developed by continuous modification, and at the same time always reflects the progress of the society. Visualization and fascination have been the major power of any form of art. For example, any religion in this world cannot exist without music, which helps realize the faith of the church to an astonishing extent. Each and every revolution on this earth was accompanied by numerous corresponding art productions, because the artists sense the circumstances, and then reflect their sensations with sophisticated techniques in their production, which can be easily perceived by the public through powerful empathy. Nobody could evaluate art with correct or not standard, needless to say the public, they simply feel it is good or not, therefore art has always had magic influence on the public, and society in general.

However, it’s been said that there is no science without fancy and no art without facts. Science fictions have long been the functioning as a major vehicle for the public dissemination of science; scientists share parallel view of space, time and light etc. with artists. Not only are art and science interrelated with each other but they also contribute to each other in various way. Therefore, it is hard to compare the contributions of art and science, it is simply partial to say that either one contributes more to the society than another does.

In the future ,students may have the choice ofstudying at home by using technology such ascomputers or television or of studying attraditional schools . Which would you prefer?Use reasons and specific details to explain yourchoice.

If I have a choice between studying at home using computers and television or studying in atraditional school setting, I’d choose the traditional setting . Maybe it’s just what I’m usedto ,but I don’t think that technology can replace teachers and classrooms.

After all, technology can fail. Computers go down and computer programs crash. Televisionsbreak, and the electricity can suddenly go off. In those situations, who's going to teach me? IfI'm at school, and the television or the computers stop functioning, there's a teacher to step inand change the lesson plan. Teachers can draw on their teaching experience and be creative.Computers and televisions can't.

I'd also miss the chance to interact with other students if I weren't going to school. I thinklearning to play and work with other people is one of the most important lessons we learn inschool. It prepares us for life, and for working with other people. Being with other people alsohelps us discover who we are.

Another concern I have about studying at home is getting distracted. It's strange, but I thinkbeing home alone is more distracting than being at school with a lot of people. At school, we'reall focused on the same subjects. At home, it would be so easy to turn off the computer or thetelevision and go do something else. I might tell myself that it's okay to play a computer gamenow and make up the study hours later. Chances are, I'd never make up the study hours.

I'm all in favor of using technology in the classroom. I think computers and television are greatways for students to have access to a lot of information. I just don't think they should be theonly tools I have as a student. I also need teachers and other students to help me get acomplete education.
