Foreignization and Domestication Translation on the Dimension of Culture
Abstract
Translation, in its essence, is intercultural communication. Domestication and foreignization are two very important concepts and strategies in translation. And, cultural translation researches caused the debate of domestication and foreignization. While in fact, the debate between them regarding “which is good and which is bad” is utterly insignificant, for they are complementary to and interdependent on each other. This thesis firstly talks about the relationship between culture and translation and the theory of foreignization and domestication, then discusses the application of domestication and foreignization in proverb, literature and new social cultural words translation. Finally we get the conclusion that cultural translation should be as foreignizing as possible and as domesticating as necessary, and both overforeignization and overdomestication ought to be avoided. And in the translating practice, translators should find a point of perfection between the two and well control the degree of the two.

摘 要
翻译实质上就是跨文化交际。归化和异化是文化翻译中的两个重要的概念和处理翻译中文化因素的具体策略。然而，文化翻译的研究引发了异化与归化之争，实际上其间关于“孰优孰劣”的争论是毫无意义的，2者各有其存在的价值。归化和异化是相互依赖，相互补充的。本文首先讨论了文化与翻译之间的关系，引出异化与归化翻译理论。然后分析了异化与归化在谚语、文学作品及社会文化新词中的应用。最后得出结论：在翻译实践中，我们应能异化则异化，有必要归化则归化，避免过度异化和归化。所以，译者应在其间寻求1个最佳点，把握好其度。
