Abstract
Women, regarded as the weaker sex, are always looked down upon in our society. This gender bias also has a reflection in the English language. Such language is called sexist language. This thesis deals with sexism in English language use. After a brief introduction to some relevant background information, different definitions by several scholars of sexist language are offered. Various manifestations of sexism in English are examined. Causes of sexism, historical, cultural, as well as social, are analyzed and, strategies for the elimination of sexist language in English are suggested.

摘 要
在我们的社会中，妇女通常被认为是弱势群体而被轻视。这种性别歧视现象同样体现在英语语言中，这种语言被称为性别歧视语言。本文分析了英语语言中的性别歧视现象和原因，并且提出了避免这种现象的策略。第—部分简要介绍性别歧视语言的背景；第2部分阐述了各学者对性别歧视语言的定义；第3部分着重描写了英语语言表述中的性别歧视：第4部分从历史文化和社会方面分析了语言中性别歧视现象存在的原因：第5部分为如何避免性别歧视提出了建议。
