如:MBA.MSC.

Dear Sir:
I am choosing geography for one main reason and this reason has manysubdividing links. I want to continue to study geography at higher educationbecause I find it interesting. I enjoy this subject because of its content andthe way in which it overlaps with so many other subjects. This therefore makesgeography a very useful subject and one I am very keen to continue to understandand develop. Because geography overlaps with many other subjects and that thecourse encompasses many techniques and skills I find it as being a very usefultool in the future workplace. I enjoy finding out how and most importantly why.If this includes why is such business parks situated on suburban fringes to whydoes the global distribution of earthquakes effect human activates in thatparticular area. I believe geography will develop my analytical skills which isimportant because I want to become an intelligence officer in the armed forces.I also like travelling and my knowledge and techniques have helped me explainmany things like reasons for terraced farming in areas of Maltaandinfrastructure in Florida. I teacher once said to me in secondary school travel, and your start to notice things around you and your be able tounderstand what and why are certain things there’
I am currently studying A2 geography and biology. This is also accompaniedby AS physical education and an AS physics which I completed in my first year. Iam enjoying my courses this year because I find the content relatively easy todigest as opposed to physics last year. I found this subject fairly challenginglast year because the content comprised itself mainly of numbers, figures, theories and set equations which where some what difficult to interpret. Asopposed to the courses iamdoing this year where I find the content easier toconsume because I can relate it to visual situations. I enjoyed parts of thecourse last year because there where noticeable links between the subjects. Forinstants geography and biology cross over more than once during the year. I havedeveloped new skills such as my oral and working with others on coursework As Inoted above my aspirations for the future lay within the armed forces. I need tohave well developed analytical skills as well as good oral skills. Part of beingan intelligence officers is being able to annotate pictures and many othersources of data i.e. infra red
Studying geography will help me develop these skills to a standard wellrecognised in my chosen field of profession. I’m also looking to travel in thefuture and my knowledge of geography will help me understand the places I visitin much more detail
I have had one experience in paid employment and one work experienceplacement. During my work experience I worked at H+S aviation. This is a companythat repairs helicopters and light aircraft. During my time here I experiencedthe importance of meeting deadlines as these engines where urgently needed forthe customer. I also established working with a team and co operating with manydepartments. One important skill I learned is attention to detail/ this was veryimportant because the slightest of inaccuracy could cause the aircraft engine tomalfunction causing death to the customer. During my paid employment I worked ata café in ASDA. I learned many important lessons here like health and safetyalong with food hygiene. I also exercised working in a busy environment and goodcommunication and team skills were necessary to achieve the goals. I feel thatmany of the skills I have learnt are relevant not just to geography but life inits self. Team skills may be put to good use in a fieldwork situation as well asmeeting deadlines and attention to detail. These all figure in some aspect ofthe course and university life in general
I enjoy sporting activities a lot and they are important in social wellbeing. I enjoy playing golf and especially football. I have reached semiprofessional for Fareham town where I scored the winning goal on my debut atthis level, being only the third player to ever to do this. I have also hadtrials with the major south coast professional sides such as Portsmouth,Southampton and Bournemouth. I enjoy leisure activities such as fishing andcamping and I go away regularly in the summer to carry out these activities
I also enjoy socialising with fris at the weeks but football usuallytakes precedence over socialising. There are specific areas around the citywhere these can be exercised together. I enjoy sping time with my family, either going out for the evening, sping the week camping and fishing orjust play football or golf.

Letters of recommendation are a very important part of the application process. As colleges become more and more sought out from the increasing number of applicants each year, the need to stand out from the competition is also increasing. Below we will provide helpful information on how to write a college recommendation as well as advice for tailoring each letter.
A high school transcript can help tell an admissions office a lot about a candidate, but a college recommendation letter provides an opportunity for them to see the whole person. While recommendation letters are never a bad idea to include in the application, even if the college does not require one, many colleges do necessitate the inclusion of one. Here is some advice to keep in mind when writing a college recommendation letter:
Know the candidate - it may sound obvious, but it is important that you know the candidate well. After all, how can you write a college recommendation letter for a someone you know little about? Recommendations written for candidates with a vague familiarity are often identifiable and can do more harm than good.
How you know the candidate - when you write a college recommendation letter, make sure to include how you know the candidate as well as the length of time you have known that person.
Provide relevant information - be sure to find out the purpose of the recommendation so as to provide relevant information about the candidate and his or her specific qualifications. If the recommendation is to supplement an application, discuss how that person is an appropriate candidate for the college he or she is applying to. Despite its purpose, however, the overall goal of a college recommendation letter is to attest to the capabilities and character of the candidate.
Obtain a rsum - another tip on how to write a collage recommendation letter is to first obtain the students rsum with a listing of his or her GPA, activities, awards, leadership roles, community service, employment experience and special skills. The more information you have about a particular candidate, the more constructive your recommendation can be.
Personalize the letter - to help make the letter more personal, before writing a college recommendation letter, it is important to determine the person to whom the letter should be addressed. If the student is unaware of the name, the letter may begin "Dear Selection Committee."
Proofread the letter - one of the most important tips on how to write a college recommendation letter is making sure to proofread it when finished. A letter containing grammatical errors will appear unprofessional and may leave a negative impression.
Mailing the letter - establish with the student whether the recommendation letter must be mailed in an official envelope from your institution, or if it can be included with the application. If it is to accompany the application, return the letter to the candidate in a sealed envelope.
Determine the deadline - double-check with the student as to the deadline of the college recommendation letter. Ideally, you will be given an adequate amount of time to complete a positive, detailed letter, however, the most important detail is that it is received before the application deadline.
Save the letter - when you have finished writing a recommendation, be sure to save it in order to help make writing the next college recommendation letter easier. The student will likely be applying to more than one school and may ask that you write a separate recommendation for each one. Although it is important that each letter is tailored to the application at hand, select information can be recycled for multiple letters. It is more convenient to tailor the original passage than to repetitively recollect the advice on how to write a college recommendation.
What Colleges Really Want
Colleges place a large emphasis on a students academic ability because what is accomplished in high school is the strongest predictor of their academic success in college. What colleges really want, however, is a win-win situation. They want to admit students who will thrive at their institution, not only for the students benefit, but for their own as well. As more and more students become college-bound, colleges and universities will become increasingly selective, placing more emphasis on the ability to know how to write a college recommendation letter.
As a teacher, counselor, employer or personal acquaintance of a college-bound teen, you may at some point receive a request for help in writing a college recommendation letter. These students are not only placing their trust in you, they are putting you in the unique position to make an impact on whether or not they are admitted to their college of choice. Following this advice on how to write a college recommendation will help to ensure a professional letter and give your candidate a greater likelihood of being accepted into his or her college of choice.

Applied Program: Wireless Telecommunications
On August 27, 2002, at the Central Institute of the Datang Telecom Technology and Industry Group based in Beijing, a young woman, full of energy and self-confidence, was giving a presentation entitled “The Design of the Switching Numerical Method of the Radio Resource Management (RRM) Strategy in TD-SCDMA, and the Testing of Its Simulated Systems,” which received rapt attention and high remarks from all the experts in Computer and Telecommunications who attended the meeting. That woman was I. At present, TD-SCDMA, W-CDMA, and CDMA 2000 are considered the main technological standards in the third generation of the world’s technological development in mobile telecommunications. And the design of a switching computation method for the RRM Strategy is a key element and technological crux for the TD-SCDMA technology. In retrospection, I found that it was my great enthusiasm for mobile telecommunications, and my persistent pursuit of accuracy and perfection that have helped me win accolades from colleagues and experts.
In China, since the TD-SCDMA uses a smart antenna, it makes a demand for a finer research on the computation method for the RRM Strategy, in areas such as PC, DCA, and HC. To me, a new starter in the company, it was a real challenge. Since the research team was new, it lacked engineering data and practical experience, although the equipment of the lab was quite advanced. It was only after much library research, thinking, and consultation with experts did I find a RRM computation method suitable for a smart antenna. Because a smart antenna has its advantages of a more accurate VE locating and reduced searching areas, this computation method effectively lowers the complexity of the switching process and its failure rate. During the time when I worked for the project, I often stayed up several days in a roll to perfect a lab test. But I also derived an enormous sense of satisfaction and fulfillment after overcoming obstacles, which more than compensated the pains and difficulties that I had to go through.
The rapid development of mobile telecommunication technology places a high demand on professionals working in this field. To a certain extent, it has to be a labor of love. My keen interest in mobile telecommunications emanated from the concept of “personal communication.” During my undergraduate years at the Northwest University of Industry, I spent much of my spare time browsing over professional publications and journals, to keep myself abreast of current developments. The concept of “personal communication” I encountered during this process impressed me immensely. A system of “personal communication” is one that allows the user to communicate at anytime, anyplace, to anyone, and in any way. It painted such a beautiful of picture of a future society that I became fully convinced that it is a subject well worth my lifelong pursuit. This was why I chose Mobile Telecommunications as my area of specialization in the graduate program. As a graduate student, I completed several research projects independently and successfully, including, for instance, “Turbo Code and the Application of Its Coding Concept.” In short frame conditions, the Turbo Code, with its improved application in engineering, seems to have a bright future in real-time voice-data service (Please see the attached article). After completing my graduate degree, I entered Datang Group, a pioneer in China’s software development. Here I did software design for the switch control template used at the RNC equipment for the TD-SCDMA system, and developed a switching computation method for the RRM Strategy. I went through the entire process of software design for the switch control template for the RNC equipment, from topic analysis to the project outline and then to actual program writing.
The present development of telecommunication technology indicates that the smart antenna, software radio, and the transmission technology of subline下行high-speed subdivided exchange data (下行高速分组交换数据传输技术) are key technologies for today’s mobile telecommunications. Software radio, in particular, has attracted much public attention. The use of DSP and software to solve the problem of wireless interfaces of diverse standards on a public hardware platform has become a major issue pursued by many professionals in our field. I too hope to make my own contribution to the technological development in this area. In the next few years, the traditional concept of using chips to build wireless equipment for mobile telecommunication will be seriously challenged. In recent years, the technologies and standards of the third generation of mobile telecommunication have been rapidly updated. Software radio, I believe, will be the future of our trade.
My desire to know more about computer engineering prompted me to rise above my present conditions. The United States, as technological superpower, have first-rate teaching faculty and research facilities in the world. Its ideological openness and tolerance make a sharp contrast to Chinese culture, which tends to value tradition rather than innovation. Wireless telecommunication may be said to be one of the newest research areas, and it is new concepts and new vision that give life to the industry. I believe that in the fine research environment in the United States, I will be able to make “shortcuts” in attaining my academic and career goals.
I would like to apply for admission to the Center for Wireless Telecommunications of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. As the most prestigious research institute in Wireless Telecommunications, the Center has a large number of famed scholars and professionals dedicated to the theoretic research of Wireless Telecommunications. Meanwhile, it maintains close contact with the telecommunication industry, and in this way can test the theory in practical experimentation, which in turn promotes theoretic research. It is an ideal place for me to fully develop my research potential.
I look forward to finding a teaching position at college level in China after completing my graduate education, which will allow me to continue my research work in Wireless Telecommunications. I will impart my theoretic and practical knowledge to my students, and hope that this will benefit China’s wireless telecommunication industry, and society at large. I will make every effort to make the idea of “personal communication” a reality.

I thought much before I began to write the PS. However, holding the pen,Isuddenly felt wordless because I have too much to say,too much to write.Standing on the crossroad of life,I determined to study abroad without anyhesitations.
It was not the desire for the life overseas, but the pursuit of myprofessional study that aroused my idea to study abroad. I was longing for thefurther study and embedded understanding of the essence of Information Science, tasting its charm. Pocketing this interest,I came into the department ofBeijing Forestry University. Through several years’ study there,I graduallyrealized that the modern information society needed not only the professionaltalents in information science, but also the embedded researches in this fieldin order to use it into every enterprise. Meanwhile,it is certain that theinformation science is just the developing trend in the future, which couldhistorically change the ever familiar life style. Therefore,in the process oflearning,I can taste its interest and challenge, with which I can keep abreastwith the latest technology. Furthermore,I think it was valuable for me tocontribute my youth into the Information Science, the most prospectiveenterprise in the future.
My ordinary score on my school report will tell you that I am not good atexaminations. Those so-called “examination skills” are also strange to me.Instead,I emphasize the practical operations and the real needs of the society, expecting to learn the knowledge and technology that stands at the top of theperiod. Therefore,I got the latest knowledge mainly by reading large amount ofEnglish books and browsing the websites. Besides,I participated in manypractical activities,in which I could use what I have learnt into practice.
In my sophomore year, just as other schoolmates were submerging themselvesinto the fairy world of PC games,I began my part time working experience byworking as a technician on the website of a small company. Just at that excitingtime,I found that it was very difficult to use the theories I learnt on classinto the practical work. Trapped in the gap between the school and society,Icollected and summarized much practical professional files from a series ofwebsites and learnt the HTML language and the CSS design by myself. From thefirst attempt in the society,I realized that I got much from difficultiesrather than smooth work. On designing the information part of the website,Icould not find the perfect combination between the files. However,as ahard-nosed boy,I was not defeated by the difficulties, but very excited towardsthem. By classifying and summarizing the files I found on the websites,Ifinally solved the problem.
yours Sincerely

Dear xx,
It is an apparent truth that, in modern technology-dominated and highlycompetitive society, the kind of people who will be most highly appreciated arethose who command central business regulations and legal rules, grasp advancedtechnology ahead of others and apply it to productive utilization, and possessoutstanding management talents and interpersonal communication skills. Although, with the alarmingly rapid integration of global economy and the dramatic changesof technological advances, competitions among management talents are alsobecoming increasingly fierce, the professional with the aforesaid combination oftalents will ultimately prevail, and are bound to become the most sought-afterpeople on the job market. As a person who has achieved moderate successes inmarket competitions, I have made a seemingly abrupt and incomprehensivedecision—to suspend my booming career in favor of an application for admissioninto the Management Science and Engineering program at your prestigiousuniversity. However, the motivation behind this present application issufficiently simple—to develop myself through your program into a well-trainedprofessional with that special combination of talents, with a strong academicbackground, who can stand up to the challenges of tomorrow.
My confidence in my potential is derived from the outstanding performancethat I have produced over the past few years in my business activities. Upongraduation from The xx Institute of Light Industry in 1996, I, despite myundergraduate specialization in leather engineering, chose the employment withthe xx International Trade Company in an effort to satisfy my interest inbusiness and management. From working as sales representative to sales managerof the Company, I carried out important responsibilities and made importantachievements. I was responsible for marketing computer accessories and networkequipment in the three provinces which constitute the entire Northeastern partof China. I was also in charge of selling xx automobiles and my annual salesvolume reached an average of 50 million RMB. Then in 2000, I switched to work atChina xx Information Technology Corporation, one of the top 100 electronicenterprises in China, where I participated in the implementation of more than adozen projects, including several major projects such as the project ofrenovating the large screens in the xx at the worth of 10 million RMB. Myequally outstanding performance in those projects won high evaluations from myimmediate superior.
My ability to carry out effective study and research as demonstrated in mypast academic career is sufficient to convince me of my adaptability to a newacademic environment and to a rigorous curriculum. As a child from a onceimpoverished farm family, it is all too natural for me to have experienced anacademic pursuit replete with hardships and challenges. It is exactly thisdirect experience and deep insight into the difficult conditions of humanexistence that resulted in my sustained diligent efforts at my coursework, hencemy consistently distinguished academic performance. In the local best middle andhigh school, I was ranked first, participating in national physics andmathematics competitions and city-level English contests and winning goodresults. I self-studied the college courses of mathematic analysis and advancedmathematics, and took up English and Japanese as my first and second foreignlanguages. The xx Institute of Light Industry which I subsequently entered isone of the key colleges of China and I handled all my coursework with muchfacility. Among a wide variety of specialized courses, I liked AdvancedMathematics, Physical Chemistry and Principles of Chemical Engineering most, andmy self-education focused on Linear Algebra, Probability Theory, and C ProgramDesign. The study of those abstruse courses was a kind of enjoyment for me, notonly training my ability of logical thinking but also providing me with a soundmathematics foundation. When a sophomore, I was the first in my class to passthe National English Proficiency Test (Band VI). Although I had to work hardpart-time in order to cover my younger brother’s and my own tuition, I did notallow my part-time jobs to interfere with my proper academic work, achievingvery satisfactory results in almost all the courses. My score for mathematicswas the highest in the class and I was awarded third-class scholarship.
Even during my undergraduate career, I had tried to gain some managementskills. In the second year, I was made responsible for the management, logisticsand personnel recruitment of the Students Part-Time Store invested by theInstitute itself. In the third year I took part in the training sponsored by thexx Company regarding advanced process of leather treatment and productutilization. I was also very active in extracurricular events, launching studentorganizations such as the departmental Chess Association and CalligraphyAssociation. Those activities helped me improve the precious ability incommunication, coordination and negotiation and profoundly realize theimportance of teamwork. My undergraduate thesis is my first major adventure intothe realm of management. Entitled The Overall Design of a Leather ChemicalEngineering Plant and its Leather Chemical Engineering, my thesis was designedto change the then prevalent trend of leather treatment dominated by manuallabor which fell far short of optimum resource allocation and utilization. Icreatively modeled my design on the advanced technological processes of Xxxandother foreign companies. The large-scale leather chemical engineering plant thatI designed preserved traditional processes while featuring advanced equipment, more rationalized processes and resource allocation. When applied to severalplants, my design helped reduced costs by 20 percent and my thesis was rated“first-class.”
Based on my rich work experience and sound learning capacity, I haveformulated a tentative study plan for my proposed program. I will firstconsolidate my theoretical foundation, learning basic courses in ENGINEERINGECONOMY、MANAGEMENT OF TECHNOLOGY VENTURES、INFORMATION SCIENCE while graspingknowledge in finance, information application system, supply management, decision making and policy making. At the same time, I will try to applyadvanced theories and skills to practice and gain a deep understanding ofWestern management concepts and experiences. I will also pay due attention toChina’s developments in the relevant fields and explore how to best apply myknowledge to solve realistic problems in China. My ultimate objective is tobecome a person with knowledge of several different languages, laws in relevantcountries, equipped with advanced management concepts and skills, and able tokeep pace with global technological development. I believe that the educationallevel and the faculty resource of your university can help me fulfill myaspirations.
My objective is set and my preparations are made. I cannot help feelingexcited over the prospect of becoming a well-trained management elite. In thisundertaking, I need your academic input and your first-class training to be aleader in tomorrow’s competitive world.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Professor xxxx
due to the comprehensiveness of china’s “reform and open” policies, economics plays an increasingly important role in the development of its global position. though more and more companies built, management of companies cannot catch up with the development of the companies. management is a burgeoning field in china, so i hope i can acquire more modern knowledge on management in england.
the roots of my strong interest in business can be traced back to my childhood. my father was among the first of china’s new breed of modern entrepreneurs. as a young girl, it was inspirational hearing about his business ventures, and meeting the varied and interesting circle of entrepreneurs. my mother was also involved in business as an accountant, helping him with simple calculations. and so it was early in my life that i hoped i, also, would someday be able to enter the realm of business.
with the time of growing up, i preferred reading books to satisfy my curiosity. i never ceased to contemplate over the questions i encountered. subjects on business and management became a special fascination to me and my knowledge of psychology as well as interest in this field was increasing rapidly.
as a high school student in china, i had to concentrate on the college entrance examination (cee), even so, books not related to the exams were never excluded from my life. unfortunately when sitting in the exam in june, XX, i was so nervous that i didn’t score well in the cee exam. i enrolled in the department of computer science in zhejiang college of traditional chinese medicine. any attempt to persuade myself to focus on my major turned out to be a failure at the beginning of my college life. after several terms, i realized that i would never be interested in being a programmer or an engineer. at that moment, i lost my direction and objectives.
my persistence in reading saved me from the dark situation. as a matter of fact, i enjoyed reading the books included encyclopedia american, and some books about management by peter f.drucker. i began to notice something interesting: why some companies can produce more than others? why some company can sell more than others? why some companies can build up but others cannot when facing the same difficulties?
with the questions in my mind, i started to read many relevant books. i was lucky to read the book “jack: straight from the gut”by jack welch, in which john a. byrne makes a clear illustration that the management is important for a company. when i was a junior, i ran a bookshop by myself near my school. i should manage not only the finance in the shop but also the employees in my shop even made some strategies to enlarge the business in my shop to hold on the run the shop. from this, my interpersonal skills and the capacity in business has been greatly developed, definitely i was increasingly interested in what i was doing. by december, XX, i had finally determined to take business management as my career instead of it. to accumulate more relevant knowledge, i strived to gain more practical work experience in some big companies.
fortunately, as a senior, i began by conducting an internship in the architecture company in zhejiang province. over six months, i worked as an assistant of the manager to harmonize the relationship between the different departments in this company and to draft some management system, which broadened my perspective of management conditions and business performance in different industries. the experience showed me that management is much more important than that of i thought in big companies. after graduation, i continued my work in this company. in may, XX, the company offered me an opportunity to participate in an training program held by a famous management school. through in-depth discussions with teachers and students in the classes, they all encouraged me to pursue my future career in management field because of my intellectual ability and the brand new ideas i mentioned.
during the short period of training, i realized that pursuing a higher degree in management is a wise choice for me now. lancaster, with its excellence in management, represents the perfect fit for my needs. in your challenging environment, i can build the required foundation of knowledge related to management to achieve my goals. i am firmly convinced that your admission will be my first step of success. with this in mind, i hereby submit my application, and await your favorable reply.
as a child i often accompanied my father to his small coin shop and spent hours watching him work. when i was older, i sometimes set up displays, waited on customers, and even balanced the books. this experience instilled in me the desire to own and manage my own business someday, yet i understand that the business world today is more complex. this complexity requires more education, and with that in mind, i am applying to the master’s of business administration program at indiana university bloomington (iub).

Family is quite important for every one, for it is the first classroom forus to receive education. My grandfather once was a banker. My father is abusinessman while my mother is a statistic practitioner. All of them play asignificant role in the establishment and development of my view of life andview of value; in the meantime, they help me form the personalities of honesty, diligence and perseverance. Edified by them, I show a keen interest infinance-concerned courses. My family is vital wealth in my whole life, for itendows me with such interest in this field and personality of striving forwardbravely.
Through specialized study, my great interests in courses related toeconomics and finance are ignited. I once read Doctor David Friedman’s TheEconomics of Everyday Life, in which, he adopts popular and easy-understoodcases and flexibly combines obscure economic principles with people’s dailylives. Through reading the book, I had a good mastery of principles ofeconomics, which were boring to others. I admired Doctor David Friedman verymuch. In the same year, I read Price Theory, a representative work of him.Through studying this book, I fell in love with knowledge regarding currency andfinance. Driven by thirst for knowledge, I began to minor in Futures Investment& Management. During that period, I met a good teacher, that is, ProfessorLv, who is a prestigious scholar in China’s futures industry. Professor Lvcombined theories of futures market with practice and connected truth withfutures market, which was regarded as a gambling establishment by others, imparting knowledge about futures market and economic investment to us. Suchteaching mode coincided with my studying habits, so I involved myself in thestudy quickly. We often discussed the development of China’s futures industry aswell as price fluctuation of world’s futures market. In the autumn of 20X, I wasinvited to assist Professor Lv in completing part of research work of TheRevealing of Yen’s Development Route to RMB’s Development in the project of TheEstablishment of China’s Financial Futures Market. Owing to my outstandingperformance, I won commendations from Professor Lv.
On top of specialized study, I set up the first Leukaemia Love VolunteerAssociation of our university in Jilin Province in my free time, acting asChairman. We have helped 10 leukaemia patients, who are from poor families, through the way of love volunteer activities. Every year, we hold lecturesconcerning leukaemia and organize volunteer signing up activity of CMDP (ChineseHematopoietic Stem Cell Warehouse) and activity of extraction of blood samplesat our university. Over the three years, under my leadership, the associationhas been developed and we have made great achievements, so many medias reportour deeds. In October 25, 20XX, Xinhua News Agency reported our activities onits website (http://www.jl.xinhuanet.com/news/20XX-10/25/contentX3094593.htm).In addition, our deeds were also reported on the third issue of East, West,South and North ? Undergraduates, a famous magazine of students in China, in20XX. All these honors fully revealed the confirmation of the society and ouruniversity. Now, one of 150 volunteers in CMDP are developed by our association. Our association was appraised as Elaborate Association of Jilin University inthe successive three years and I myself won the title of Top 10 Students of TheFirst Moving Jilin University of our university. Meanwhile, by means of foundingvolunteer association, not only my view of value is actualized, but also myorganizational ability is forged. As a result, my qualities are greatlyuplifted. Aside from these, I also have a liking for sports activities, good atdashing, football, etc. The youth should be full of vitality.

Dear X,
Since I was young I have always had a keen interest in the way that thethings around me work. From marvelling at the telephone to how planes can fly, engineering advances have never failed to captivate me.For this reason,I havealways tried to find out how such things function, and about how they have hadan impact on the society we live in today.Coupled with the fact that I havealways enjoyed the logical and problem-solving processes involved in maths andphysics,I decided several years ago to embark on a career in engineering.
Since then,I have endeavoured to find out as much about engineering aspossible.I researched the great engineers such as Brunel, and discovered thegreat works they had completed.I have attended several engineering conferences, the most recent of which I was selected to speak live on radio about myexperiences. And once I had completed several weeks worth of work experience,Iwas assured that it was the career that I wanted to pursue.
This summer,I took part in the Nuffield Bursary scheme for a month, working in a team,at Aerogistics Ltd.Our project was to analyse and implementa new system for the distribution of consumable materials to the individualdepartments within the company. We found the current system to be highlyinefficient and after much data gathering and thought, presented our findings tothe senior managers of the company who agreed with our ideas. The last week wasspent starting the implementation of these ideas.I found the experience to behighly challenging, yet rewarding especially as it led to me gaining a GoldCrest Award.I also found it useful as I got to see engineers at work and thedaily problems that they face.I learnt that there is a lot more to being a goodengineer than possessing technical competence, although this is undoubtedlyimportant; team work, communication and leadership skills are vital as well.
I have also recently been selected to complete two placements with armyengineers. One of these placements will focus on the more practical side ofengineering while the other will focus on the skills needed by a professionalengineer focussing on project planning and leadership.I hope to find theexperience useful.
In my spare time I like to play sport and music. In secondary school I wascaptain for the Netball and Football teams,as well as taking part in variousother sports. The experience of this greatly improved my team working abilitiesas well as my fitness. As a keen musician I am working towards my grade 5 theoryand grade 7 practical on cello.I am a member of a Youth Orchestra, and havejust recently completed a tour of Italy.I am also in the school orchestra andhave led several orchestras in the past, before progressing to the LYO.
In school,I am Deputy Head Girl, helping to lead a team of over 40prefects.I find this to be a challenging and stimulating role and believe ithas developed my confidence immensely. As well as carrying out the normal dutiesof a prefect, such as supervising younger students,I must lead and manage theother prefects. My role involves arranging rotas, organising after school eventssuch as the Year 7 social and parents evenings and public speaking as well asother responsibilities, which have developed my communication, organisation andleadership skills immensely. The role requires a lot of commitment, but it hashelped to improve my time management,as I try to strike a balance between itand school work, which is my main priority.I have also been selected to competein the Physics Olympiad and have been entered for the Biology AdvancedExtension.
During my time at university I hope to gain a good degree, which will standme in good stead for when I enter the world of work.I would like to continue myeducation in a place where I can thrive both academically and socially, andwhere I can put my determination and motivation into good use.Thank you.
Yours sincerely,

Dear x,
“If a nation can be compared to a large vessel at sea, then the journalistsare its watch-keepers who timely report the treacherous shoals and hiddendangers to ensure the safe journey of the vessel.” This celebrated andthought-provocative motto by Joseph Pulitzer gives a most vivid and profoundelucidation of the crucial role that journalists can play in contemporary sociallife. Regarding the role of the watch-keeper, I have my own understanding. Thecareer of being a journalist entails “thinking allowed and thinking aloud.” Heor she should, first of all, be an active, sensitive participant of social lifeand demonstrate independent and critical insights. Apart from such qualities ascourage, social conscience, objectivity, enthusiasm and discretion, a journalistmust have deep concerns for the destiny of his/her nation and the welfare of itspeople.
I never cherish any blind faith in the accepted theories and teachings butinstead have endeavored to cultivate a skeptical attitude toward what I amexposed to. In my notebooks are recorded not only what my teachers have taughtme but also my personal contemplations and critical views. On many importantissues I have the habit of discussing with the most learned and inspiringteachers from whom to seek enlightenment and to probe into the essence of thematter through “collisions of ideas”. I have also devoted most of my spare timeto studying technical literature in the libraries, to keep myself informed ofthe latest academic developments and to develop my own academic perspectivesfrom a wealth of information. In taking examinations, I seldom confine myself towhat is laid down in the textbooks but instead try to present my ownunderstandings, observations and reflections. It is indeed not easy to be one’strue self but the joy of exercising my own academic initiative and exploring myacademic possibilities has given me immense satisfaction.
In studying the courses in myself specialty, I have paid close attention tolaying a solid academic foundation. I have been particularly fascinated by suchcourses as Mass Communication, Theories of Journalism, Theories of Broadcastingand Television Journalism, and History of Western Journalism, which have allowedme to gain a deep understanding of the principles of journalism and to examinejournalism in a historical context. The world of journalism represents anexciting world of ideas and ideals, a world of variegated phenomena that make upthe reality of our social life. Apart from compulsory courses, I took a numberof optional courses like The History of Ancient China. This course has been veryimportant to me because, in order to understand how China ’s mass communicationevolved in the contemporary period, it is necessary to gain insights into China’s traditional cultural and historical legacy and how those cultural andhistorical traditions shape the present and even the future of the country.
“A true scholar must be well-read and well-traveled.” This well-knownChinese saying points to two essential qualities that a successful student andscholar must possess—ample book knowledge and practical experience (the latterresulting from field trips far and wide). I believe this principle holdsespecially true for practitioners of mass communication because it is more of anapplied academic discipline. For half a year just as a freshman, I didinternship at x Television Station—one of China ’s major TV producer—where Iperformed two types of responsibilities: translating English materials intoChinese and editing news. The first responsibility exposed me to the standardpractices of western mass media while the second allowed me to obtain practicalwork experience.
Later, working as an interning reporter at x Daily, the largest newspaperin the city, I concentrated on the issue of possible water pollution in theThree-Gorge Region where the world’s largest hydrological project is under way.For a whole month, I traveled to 10 counties and investigated the operation ofthe 19 water treatment factories in this region. In addition, I interviewed 12environmentalists and based on detailed facts and statistics I gave an objectiveand detailed analysis of the possible negative impacts of the project on thelocal water environment and urged the local authorities to take concretemeasures to guard against possible consequences. My serial articles producedwidespread sensation and made the protection of water environment the hotsubject of the time in the local media. For me, this was a most importantexperience as a feature story writer because for the first time in my life Imade extensive field trips and reported on the issues most closely related tothe welfare of the general public. This experience significantly heightened myawareness of the social responsibility of the journalist and of the role that ajournalist can play in promoting the social welfare of the people.
My independent thinking, sound academic performance and practical mediaexperience distinguished me from most of my fellow students and came to theattention of Prof. xX, a leading scholar on “cultural communication” in myuniversity. At his invitation, I became a key member of his research team andserved as his research assistant. I read a number of leading academic journalsincluding x and analyzed all the available American news programs recorded onvideotapes. Based on my research findings, I wrote a research paper entitledCross-Cultural Communication Significance of English News for DevelopingCountries. The paper explores how developing countries (whose native language isnot English) can best employ English news programs as an effective tool ofcommunication with the English-speaking audience in the world, with Englishlanguage as the dominant language of communication in the ongoing globalizationcontext. I also proposed specific steps how those developing countries canpromote the communication and the influence of their national cultures in theinternational community and facilitate their social and economic development. Mypaper was published in the national-level journal TV STUDY, which indicates therare achievement of an undergraduate.
The publication of my research paper also testifies to my researchpotential. The vice chairman of my department offered to be my advisor of mygraduation thesis. Under his guidance, I am researching on media culture andconstructing analytical models. So far, I have completed the research onAmerican mainstream media culture and its pluralistic value system. My advisorhas expressed considerable appreciation of my research work so far.
x University where I am studying is a key national university thatattracts best students from every part of the country. In fierce academiccompetitions, I have managed to remain top-third in academic performance and winscholarships throughout the years. I received the honor of Outstanding Studentof x University and on account of my distinguished English proficiency I wonthe third prize for my university in the nationwide English Contest ofUniversity Students in 2002. In my extracurricular activities, I organized andparticipated in several major events for such student organizations as “Galaxy”Literary Society, “What’s New” Student Newspaper, and “Be Creative” Association. As a result, my writing skills and journalistic competence have been markedlyimproved.
Building on my educational background, my research experience and myresearch interest, I would like to pursue a Master’s program in MassCommunication. The courses that I plan to study include international masscommunication, mass media and culture, theories of mass communication, methodsof mass communication research, history of mass communication, economic andpolitical aspects of mass media. I wish to obtain comprehensive and advancededucation in mass communication and seek opportunities to participate inworkshops, seminars and projects. If possible, I will continue my study toward aPh.D. degree. I believe that academically and experientially I am qualified foryour well-respected program. Therefore I wish that you would seriously andfavorably consider my application.

In May, 20, the company offered me an opportunity to participate in an training program held by a famous management school.
