1. Eat turkey
Thanksgiving food is very traditional. Every Thanksgiving, Americans and Canadians must have fat and tender turkeys to eat. Turkey is the traditional main course of Thanksgiving. After European immigrants to America, they thought the appearance of turkeys was very similar to that of Turkey, so they were called "Turkey". In 1947, during President Trumans administration, a ceremony for the president to release turkeys was added.
In fact, this traditional ceremony can be traced back to President Lincolns administration. One day in 1863, Lincolns son Ted suddenly broke into the cabinet meeting room and asked for forgiveness of a pet turkey named Jack. Because this turkey sent to the White House is about to become peoples Thanksgiving dinner. On November 20th, 2007, President Bush released two turkeys named "May" and "Flower" at the annual ceremony. Their names together mean the "may flower" on which the Puritans came to the New World.
2. Send food
Since the 18th century, there has been a custom of sending a basket of food to poor families in the United States. At that time, a group of young women wanted to choose one day of the year to do good deeds, and thought that Thanksgiving was the most appropriate day. So as soon as Thanksgiving comes, they put a basket full of food and deliver it to the poor peoples homes. It was rumored far and near, and soon many people followed their example.
3. Set the dining table
The layout of the Thanksgiving table is also very distinctive. Housewives dont place flowers as usual, but fruits and vegetables. A big pumpkin is often placed in the middle, and some apples, corn and dried fruits are piled up around it. Sometimes people also empty apples or pumpkins, and fill them with shelled dried fruits or light candles.
Usually, the hostess can let the guests into the living room after dinner, but she doesnt do so on Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving dinner is sweet, everyone is willing to stay at the table for a while, and they happily recall the past while eating until the last candle burns out.
4. Cranberry Competition
After the Thanksgiving dinner, some families often play some traditional games, such as dancing and competitions. Some of them have been passed down to this day. There is a game called the cranberry competition, in which a large bowl with cranberries is placed on the ground, and 4 to 10 competitors sit around and each person is given a needle and thread. At the beginning of the game, they thread the needle first, and then string the cranberries one by one. As soon as 3 minutes arrive, whoever has the longest string will win the prize. As for the person who dresses the slowest, everyone jokingly gave him a worst prize.
5, corn game
It is said that this was handed down to commemorate the fact that five corns were given to each immigrant in the case of food shortage. During the game, people hid five corns in the house, and everyone looked for them separately. Five people who found the corn participated in the game, while others watched.
At the beginning of the competition, five people quickly peeled corn kernels in a bowl, and whoever peeled them first won the prize. Then people who didnt take part in the competition gathered around the bowl to guess how many corn kernels were in it, and the prize with the closest guess was given to popcorn.
6. Pumpkin Race
Competitors push pumpkins with a small spoon. The rule is never to touch pumpkins with their hands. The first one to reach the finish line wins the prize. The smaller the spoon used in the game, the more interesting the game is, which often makes everyone laugh.
In addition to these activities, some families drive to the countryside for an outing or travel by plane during festivals, especially Plymouth Port, where immigrants settled down in the past, is what tourists yearn for. There, you can see ships and Plymouth stones copied from "may flower", and you can spend several hours visiting the immigrant village. The immigrant village was built in imitation of that year. During the visit, there were also professionals dressed as Puritans to talk with tourists, giving people the feeling of being there.
