Writing An Effective Cover Letter

Cover letter

   A cover letter expresses your interest and qualifications for a certain position to a prospective employer.

It should help you “sell” your qualifications to the prospective employer.

 

 

The Ingredients of Cover Letter 

1.  Return Address

     - Address (avoid abbreviations)

     - Phone Number, Name (can be omitted)

2.  Date

     - English or American Style (be consistent)

     - Do not use abbreviated format

3.  Addressee

     - Name and proper title of addressee (be accurate)

4.  Salutation

     - Begin with “Dear Mr.” Or “Dear Ms.” Or “Dear Sir,”

5.  Subject Line

     - Theme of the letter e.g. “Application for the Post

          of Administrative Trainee” or “Application for a

          career opportunity in Media Department”

     - Underlined or Bold printed

6.  First Paragraph

     - State which position you wish to be considered

          for and what makes you the best candidate for

          that position

     - Respond to a classified ad, recruitment talk etc.

7.  Second Paragraph (could be inter-changed)

     - Detail what you could contribute to this company

     - Show how your qualification will benefit this firm

     - Discuss how your skills relate to the job’s   requirements

8.  Third Paragraph (could be inter-changed)

     - Describe your interest in the corporation

     - Emphasize your knowledge about this firm

     - Familiarize with the industry

     - Present yourself as eager to work for

9.  Final Paragraph

     - Request for an interview

     - Give your phone number and the hours you can be

                  reached

10 Closing

     - Type in your full name as it appears on your resume

     - Sign above your typed name in blue/black ink

11 Enclosure Line

     - Appear on the left at the bottom of the letter

     - (Example: Encl., Enc.: Resume)
