Dos and Don'ts of Salary Negotiation

Getting a job offer is easy, once you clear all the rounds of recruitment process. In the last round, the candidate and human resource personnel sit down to discuss the compensation package that will be offered for the particular position. This discussion is of great importance as far as negotiation of salary is concerned. The candidate has to consider the package that will be offered at the first instance. The candidate takes some time to think over it and then gets back to the person who offered the salary. If the offer is according to your expectations, then there are no issues but if you will feel that you can get a better salary then you begin with negotiation.

Salary that you are offered has to match your expectations as well as market value. You should not agree on whatever is offered to you as you are sure you have the potential and you can earn better. If you keep this thing in mind then negotiation will not be a problem. You have to be clear about your expectations. They have to be modest and something that can be offered.

Negotiation has to be always mutually beneficial. The two parties should be satisfied with the discussion of salary. The candidate should get near to what he is expecting while the company should be able to afford the salary that is demanded. Some sort of compromise has to be done from both the ends to come to a position that is acceptable. All has to be done in a professional manner. The language that has to be used should be formal in soft and positive tone.

Look at following points that will help you in negotiating a salary:

  • Don t look into the salary that your friends or acquaintances are getting in their fields of work. Every field has its own salary structure.
  • Don't be aggressive while negotiating the salary. Use polite tone.
  • Don't tell the employer how much money you require or the liabilities that you have.
  • Do tell about your work experience and what you can offer to the company through your expertise and skills.
  • Do a thorough research on the salaries that are offered in your field or profession. This can be done through talking to people from your field. Use your networking. This will help you in demanding the right salary that is offered for the particular position.
  • Do talk about the salary that you deserve for the position that has been offered. Highlight your professional achievement and how they will help the organization in progress.
  • Be flexible. You have to compromise somewhere in the negotiation process. Even if the salary is not increased and there are changes in perks, target based incentives, insurance cover and paid vacations. You can give it a thought. You have to look at the entire compensation package that is offered.
