提起美国社区大学，至今不少人的反应依然是：太Low了，不就是大专职校么?正经学生谁会千里迢迢花美元读这个?
诚然，绝大部分美国社区大学肩负着职业教育和基础高等教育的责任，方便居民就近入学。它们多数都有升学通道，即在完成两年社区大学的学习，学分达到一定要求后，就可以申请转入四年制大学，最终所获学位完全以毕业学校为准。发展至今，不少财力充足、地段优越的社区大学已经将培养学生杰出的学术能力作为宗旨，把保证学生升入优秀的四年制大学当作主业，与颇多名校签订了保证转学协议(transfer admissionguarantee，简称TAG，满足申请要求保证100%录取)，其中不乏名校。
正因如此，有能力但差点火候的中国留学生开始将社区大学作为跳板，韬光养晦两年再一鸣惊人转入名校。对于那些家庭不富裕的学生，社区大学低廉的学费也能为他们节省大笔费用，以更为划算的方式完成学业。此外，经过社区大学的过渡和缓冲，转学后的学生在名校里表现更好，后劲更足。

美国社区大学超过1600多所，教育质量参差不齐，加之国人对其陌生，难以选择。即使有若干排名，也是依照美国价值观，偏重考察职业教育表现，并不适合以升学为最终目的的中国学生参考。把社区大学当作跳板本身即存在风险，必须周密计划，切实行动，首要的则是选择一所转学有保障的院校。
社区大学虽为中国学生提供了更多升入名校的机会，但并不等于进入最佳社区大学就拿到了名校入场券，例如某些专业转学率极低或不接受转学生，学分转换存在折损等。怎样利用好社区大学，如何规避其中的风险，学生自己还应多做功课。
